Reishi (Ganoderma lucidum) is one of the most well-known medicinal mushrooms in the world, used for more than 2,000 years in traditional Chinese and Japanese medicine. Often called the “Mushroom of Immortality,” Reishi is valued for its unique appearance and naturally occurring compounds that have made it a focus of ongoing research in wellness and nutraceutical fields. The mushroom produces a distinctive fan-shaped fruiting body with a deep reddish-brown color and a glossy, lacquered surface, making it one of the most recognizable species in the fungal kingdom.

In nature, Ganoderma lucidum grows in temperate hardwood forests, typically at the base of trees such as oak, maple, and elm where it feeds on decaying wood. When cultivated, it thrives on hardwood sawdust or supplemented wood-based substrates under warm temperatures, high humidity, and low light conditions. Depending on growing conditions, Reishi can produce either traditional flat caps or unique antler-like formations. In addition to its striking appearance, Reishi is widely used in teas, extracts, and powders, and continues to be studied for the naturally occurring compounds found within its fruiting body.
